Biography

Betsy Sturdevant’s extensive teaching and performing career includes her current positions as principal bassoon of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and bassoon instruction at Capital University. She has also taught at Otterbein University and The Ohio State University, and as a private coach for young bassoonists preparing for auditions.

She has presented recitals and master classes at colleges, festivals and International Double Reed Society conferences throughout the United States. Ms. Sturdevant has participated in summer festivals in Aspen; Spoleto, Italy; Chautuaqua, New York and Boulder, Colorado. She has performed as bassoon soloist extensively with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and also with other orchestras in New York, Indiana and Ohio.

Originally from Johnson City, NY, Ms. Sturdevant began her career at age 15 as second bassoonist with the Binghamton, New York Symphony. While studying with renowned bassoon teacher K. David Van Hoesen at the Eastman School of Music she was a member of the Rochester Philharmonic bassoon section.
