Biography

Dr. Stephen Koch's 40-year career coaching intercollegiate debate spans program directorships at California State University Bakersfield, Miami University, Ohio University, and Capital University. Under his leadership, Capital's Debate Team was named national champion at the 2011 National Educational Debate Association Competition. Two varsity debaters were named 2011 national champions, and Capital’s novice team also earned trophies, with one debater, participating in his competition, being recognized as the No. 2 speaker in the nation in the novice division.

Dr. Koch also has held coaching positions at the University of Iowa and University of Georgia and provided professional service for national debate organizations and competitions, including the National Debate Tournament, Cross Examination Debate Association, American Forensic Association, and Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kappa Alpha (DSR-TKA), the national academic honorary for debate and oratory. Recently, his work with the English Speaking Union of the United States has involved promotion of debate experience for middle school students, including sponsorship of the Columbus Middle School debate championships. Dr. Koch is an expert in debate, political communication, public speaking, history of American rhetoric. He chairs the Debate Advisory Committee to The English Speaking Union of the United States and presented Paranoid Style in a Triumphal Frame: Uses of the Reagan Legacy in Extreme Right Wing Argument at CSCA Milwaukee in 2011 and Urban Debate League and Diversity in the ESU Middle School Project at OCA Springfield, in Ohio in 2010.
