Biography

Carmen S. Dixon is an Assistant Professor of Education (Science Education) at Capital University where she first joined as an instructor in 2017. Dr. Dixon holds teaching licenses in General Science and Integrated Science and has taught science in public schools in Knox County, Ohio for 14 years. She received her Ph.D. in 2015 from Ohio University in Curriculum and Instruction (science education) and taught one year at Asbury University (in Kentucky) before coming back ‘home’ to Ohio.

Dr. Dixon’s research interest focuses on motivating females to engage in more STEM related fields. In order to help facilitate this engagement, Dr. Dixon founded “Girls in Science Day” in 2008 in Knox County, where approximately 100 middle school girls from all over the county came together for one day of hands-on science workshops led by female scientists and role models. The day of workshops culminated in panel discussions, contests, and question-and-answer sessions from the role models, along with their ‘stories’ of how they became interested in science and overcame societal barriers to pursue that interest.

Dr. Dixon through the support of Capital University offers "Girls in Science Day" at Capital University. Dr. Dixon's publications focus on gender issues in science and mentoring women in the STEM field. She serves as a reviewer for various peer -reviewed journals. Dr. Dixon has presented at national conferences such as the National Science Teachers Association [NSTA], School Science and Mathematics Association [SSMA], and the International Women’s Day Festival. She also serves as co-advisor to the Capital University Education Society (CUES), judges and consults on local science fairs and as a consultant to local school districts regarding science curriculum.
