Biography

Shawn M. Beem is the Assistant Dean for Professional Development at Capital University Law School, a role in which he develops and manages all programmatic aspects of a comprehensive student-centered professional development program for over 500 J.D., LL.M., M.T., M.L.S. and Paralegal students as well as law school alumni.

Locally and nationally recognized for developing innovative programs and presentations concerning career and professional development. In addition to his presentations, he has published articles in The NALP Bulletin and in the ABA GP|Solo magazine. Dean Beem authored the chapter, “Counseling a Diverse Student Body,” in the third edition of Perspectives on Career Services published by NALP in 2015.
An active member of the Columbus legal community, Dean Beem currently serves on the Columbus Bar Association’s Certified Grievance Committee and is Secretary and member of the Board of Directors for Operation Legal Help Ohio, a statewide organization serving the legal needs of indigent veterans.

Nationally, he served as a director on the board of NALP, as chair of NALP’s LGBT section, Strategic Advisory Council, and JD Advantage Careers Task Force, as a Vice-Chair for the Experienced Professionals Section, as a Midwest Regional Coordinator, as a member and vice chair of the Nominating Committee, as a member of the 2008 Diversity Summit Planning Committee, and as a member of the NDLS Work Group.


He is a recipient of Graduate of the Last Decade and Impact awards from Capital’s Law Alumni Association for his significant achievements and notable contributions to the legal profession and the Law School.
