I have taught you the way of wisdom; I have led you in the paths of uprightness. … Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life. (Proverbs 4:11, 13)
Please join the Trinity seminary community in celebrating the teaching ministry of two of our faculty, Deacon May Schwarz, professor of church music, and the Rev. Dr. Paul Numrich, professor of world religions and interreligious relations, as they conclude their service at Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University.
Professor Schwarz came to Trinity in 1984. One of the most notable accomplishments of her 39-year tenure at Trinity was the development and leadership of the Master of Arts in Church Music program. Many in the local community have been enriched by her extracurricular activities, such as the Tuesdays at Trinity summer music series each June and the powerful Choral Evensong services held each year at All Saints and in Eastertide. Generations of Trinity students attribute their knowledge of the church’s various liturgies, as well as their confidence in singing and in chanting, to Professor Schwarz’s encouragement and guidance.
Please join us for a reception to honor May Schwarz’s music ministry at Trinity on June 13, from 5:00 – 6:30, in Koinonia (the lower level of the main Trinity building). There will be a brief program beginning at 6:00. The reception precedes this year’s Tuesdays at Trinity performance by Raise Choir, which begins in Gloria Dei at 7:00. Gifts of thanksgiving to honor Professor Schwarz will be received at the reception as well as at the concert.
Dr. Numrich began teaching at Trinity in 2004, as a faculty member shared by the Theological Consortium of Greater Columbus, which at that time included Trinity, the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, and the Pontifical College Josephinum. In recent years, he has taught at Trinity and MTSO, offering students preparing for Christian ministry the opportunity for deep engagement with people of other religious traditions. Since Trinity became part of Capital University in 2018, he has also had the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses in religion and a graduate ethics course in the MBA program. A hallmark of Dr. Numrich’s teaching has been a focus on lived religious experience.
We will be curating a memory book in honor of Dr. Numrich’s teaching ministry. Please send your memories, favorite stories, quotable quotes, and photos to trinitydean@lmjrsygc.com by the end of June.
Well done, good and faithful servants! Trinity has been strengthened by your ministry of teaching for many years, and you will be missed!
